“Why Executive Coaching Works”

3 Easy Steps

The word “coach” or “coaching” makes some people feel smaller.

It doesn’t have to be that way. It somehow takes that shape.

Maybe it’s because it makes the person who’s coached a bit vulnerable.

It’s known that coaching opens you up. You end up talking. That may not work well for some.

When someone asked me what an executive coach can do, I said: “An executive coach makes you better than you think you can on your own.”

So it’s important to have a clear understanding of what executive coaching could do for you. And check if you’re ready before you take the plunge.

1) Executive Coach and The Small Business Owner

An executive coach helps the small business owner in 3 top areas. You’ll learn how to increase cash flow, net profits and return on investment (ROI).

Now, it won’t happen right away. It depends on your business phase. And it also depends on your small business goals.

A good coach will present a finance model to grow the business. It uses a snapshot of your past results. Then the executive coach will use it to show how to improve results.

Starting off, it’s best to understand business value. That proves to be the baseline to measure gains.

2) Selecting The Coach

Be ready to spend time. This sounds easy. Yet, few business owners believe that they can even afford to dedicate time.

A coaching service works best when a business owner treats it like a doctor’s appointment.

You want to make the best of the time. And keep distractions away. That makes it worthwhile.

When you pick your executive coach, make sure you see value. When you have respect for your mentor, it makes the whole journey enjoyable.

You want to get best practices from the executive coach. And then get easy steps to carry them out. We’ll talk about that next.

3) Taking Action

An important part of engaging a coach comes with actions.

As an executive coach, I’d want my client to do his or her part. In a larger business, this means making teams effective.

For example, I use a business performance workshop to align the business in 6 areas –– Marketing, Sales, Strategy, Projects, Operations and Aftermarket Service. Once aligned, people know how to spend their time.

At the end of the workshop, the whole firm comes up with 6 actions for the business owner. It’s a continual improvement program. And the business owner commits to get results in 6 months.

Then we do it again with a new set of teams. That’s what makes the whole company nimble and ready to take on market changes.
