How Business Unit Managers Act As Team Players And Not Lose Teams Instantly

Every Business Unit Manager needs to set the example as a team player. For teams to succeed, we need:

  1. Team Meeting Harmony
  2. Team Building Method

For building team meeting harmony, the business unit manager has to check which meetings are taking place. Next he needs to check the agenda and see what they’ve done.

It’s important to see who takes part and why – and how often teams hold meetings and how long they last. The slogan “Doing the right things right” isn’t that new but it has gained even more attention because if we do otherwise, we’d be wasting materials, time and money. For the business unit manager to be effective in these meetings, he needs to set the content of the meetings and decide what he’s going to cover. For example, daily meetings in 15 minutes could deal with news, KPIs and bottlenecks and have the entire team take part. Similarly, the business unit manager needs to have meetings for:

  • covering who/what/when  (2 hrs)
  • monthly meetings for strategic items (4 hrs)
  • quarterly priorities for reaching annual goals (4-8 hrs)
  • annual tasks for reaching 3-5 year goals (1-2 days).

Each meeting will need the right teams for effectiveness.

The second part is assessing people for building great communication styles and the right people to work together for the highest result. This means we need some method to identify how people behave under stress and then have them adapt the right style so others see them in the way they like others to see them. There are various tools available to assess people such as the Myer-Briggs, Birkman or DISC profiles. We need to find people’s quadrants in various teams so the business unit manager knows if the team will deliver on its purpose. Each profile could be playing the role of assertiveness, help, coordination or evaluation. Since different assessments have different slices, it’s crucial to stick with the one that helps to group people according to their strengths and passion. If the business unit manager spends 40% of his time in selecting and appraising his people, he’d best serve his role as a team player. This will lend credibility and trust that will take the business unit into newer heights, which people didn’t imagine.

For a results-driven business unit set out to meet its annual priorities, the business unit manager as a team player would become most effective in the new economy.
