How The Head Of PMO Manages Project Ranking

The second important job of the pmo director is to manage project ranking. This includes:

  • aligning project teams and business unit goals
  • project management staffing
  • project staff  training
  • software for using staff 100%
  • project management methods

To align project teams, the pmo director has to tell the teams clearly, if the business is using a low cost approach or value driven strategy towards customers. This will help project managers and their teams to lessen project risks quickly. For accurate project status, the pmo head needs to coordinate with work center managers for real-time task progress. Teams will then finish time entries so project managers can approve them.

To keep the ideal project management staff, the pmo director has to match the project style to the team. For example, for a new market project, we need an innovative team and a creative but less formal project manager. For a complex project, the pmodirector has to place a pm who can focus on formal methods, which then bring bigger rewards for the business. Similarly, the pmo head could select project managers for high technology projects or high-speed projects, which bring benefits in improving business results or early market entry, respectively.

To keep the ideal project management staff, the pmo director has to match the project style to the team. For example, for a new market project, we need an innovative team and a creative but less formal project manager.

The project managers reporting to the pmo need to prepare the project charter. This needs to include the name of project manager and project team members. It connects the business strategy to the project purpose. After the pmo head approves it, he needs the business unit manager, who acts as the sponsor, to sign off on the charter. The pmo director has to also look at the needed skills and demand for project engineers. He then needs to balance the demand and supply each week.

The pmo director has to drive content of the training for project managers, program managers and portfolio managers. The business unit manager needs also to take part in the sponsor training, which the head of pmo then needs to coordinate. The pmo director has to review the project management methods continually to improve best practices. Once the list is ready, he or she can update the methods every 3 months and send a note to the business unit. The last part is the need to measure business unit improvement level, which the pmo director needs to coordinate every 3 or 6 months so the business can carry out the overall plans to win in the market.
